The Area of Piemonte

Although Casa di Gallo is completely private, we are not isolated. Within a five minute walk is our local hilltop village of Cassinasco. Here you'll find a local bar, a post office, a great torrone shop (which the family has owned and made since 1785) and a small shop and cafe with fresh local cheeses, hams, bread and other basic shopping items. Within a few minutes drive is the famous wine town of Canelli with its UNESCO world heritage "underground cathedrals", quaint cobbled streets, fantastic shops, enotecas, Michelin starred restaurants, home-made gelati and excellent wines including Contratto, Copo, Gancia, Riccadonna and Bosca.

In contrast to many other Italian regions, Piemonte has retained a genuine rural culture. The local areas of Monferrato and Langhe are full of fantastic vineyards, stunning countryside, and beautiful little medieval hilltop villages, most crowned by splendid castles, a reminder of the days when Piemonte was the direct route of armies marching between Italy and France.

Apart from the fabulous food and wine, Casa di Gallo is centrally located for a wide range of non-wine related day trips. Take your pick from shopping (antique markets, or the designer shops of Milan and Turin), history, culture, beauty, sea, mountains, lakes or sports. We have the mountains for excellent hiking, the Ligurian Riviera with the famous resorts of Camogli and Portofino for seaside pleasures, the beautiful Italian lakes and many local festivals full of pageantry, colour and history. The Italian Riviera is an easy day trip from Cassinasco. Drive through quiet roads to the coastal jewels of Camogli - a sweet fishing village where you can swim in the bay and then take a boat to San Fruttoso (about two hours) and explore the old convent and Castle and then go onward by ferry to Portofino. To the west, you have San Remo, Monte Carlo and in two hours you will arrive in Nice, the South of France.

Other local towns that can be reached easily from our Italian villa are the Roman Spa town of Acqui Terme with its large swimming pool, Rochetta Tanaro, Bubbio, Asti, our provincial capital and home to some of the major festivals, Alba, an attractive and quaint medieval town and home of the white truffle, Nizza Monferatto, the famous wine towns of Barolo, Barbaresco, La Morra, Mombaruzzo, home of the Amaretti biscuit and Nieve, voted one of Italy's 50 most beautiful villages.
